
Development Associate
Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) is a statewide legal services organization located in Newark, NJ that
ensures access to justice for people experiencing poverty. To carry out its mission, VLJ operates 8
distinct pro bono programs. VLJ has 21 staff members and a panel of more than 1,500 volunteers.

VLJ seeks a full-time Development Associate who will report to VLJ’s Development Director and be an
integral member of VLJ’s fundraising team. The Development Associate will also work with the
leadership team to support VLJ’s Board of Trustees, forward VLJ’s communications strategies, and
advance VLJ’s mission of volunteerism. This is an exciting time to join VLJ’s development team as the
organization continues to increase its fundraising activities. Activities include:
- Work in partnership with VLJ’s Development Director on VLJ’s fundraising efforts (processing
donations, coordinating donor mailings, managing data, supporting fundraising campaigns, and
assisting VLJ’s fundraising committees) - Take the lead on VLJ fundraising event planning and logistics
- Manage VLJ’s grant calendar, including grant applications and reports and work with VLJ’s
Executive Director to coordinate 20+ grants - Support VLJ’s Executive Director with tasks relating to VLJ’s Board of Directors (scheduling
meetings, organizing reports, and tracking data) - Participate as an integral member of VLJ’s communications efforts and work with the Bershad
Communications Manager to increase VLJ’s visibility (administering VLJ social media accounts,
updating content on VLJ’s website, etc.) - WHO SHOULD APPLY:
VLJ seeks a highly motivated candidate with a demonstrated commitment to public interest work and
fundraising. Ideal candidates will have: - Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years of development experience or 5 years of development
experience is required - Demonstrated interest in supporting nonprofit organizations and/or legal justice work
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal), with the ability to work
independently and as a member of a team - High level organization skills and attention to detail
- Self-motivated with a keen ability to multi-task and adhere to deadlines
- Insight into issues affecting our clients that will bring a new perspective to VLJ, which may be
based on prior work, volunteer, or personal experience - Sensitivity to the needs and issues faced by people experiencing poverty is required
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel,
PowerPoint) and social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter); knowledge of
Constant Contact, Canva, and/or fundraising databases is helpful - Some travel throughout New Jersey may be required
- Availability to attend occasional events and meetings, before 9am and/or after 5pm
